Together A Part (Red Rubber Road)
2020
Digital photography, in-camera shared self-portraiture
The international collective Red Rubber Road has been working together since 2015, exploring the boundaries of bodies and photography. They have a surrealistic approach to the photographic medium that recalls the experimentations of the early 20 th century French Avant-guard, which is combined with a sculptural and erotic approach to the body and an irreverent, Dadaistic attitude. Here, nothing is serious, therefore everything is.
Confined at their respective houses during the European lockdown following the COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020, AnaHell and Nathalie Dreier were challenged to reinvent their usual way of photographing: how to carry on a visual practice that juicily celebrates the body and physical contact in times of isolation and distancing?
One in Berlin, the other in Zurich, they started experimenting with what keeps them together: the interface of their screens. This is how the images of the series Together A Part are born: the black surfaces of smartphones, laptops and TVs become extensions of the duo’s bodies, both practically and visually. The queer images of Red Rubber Road depict desiring bodies tending towards each other, playing and expanding with their two-dimensional prosthesis; hermaphrodites of time that harmoniously let here and there coexist, haunting us.
